Your impact on the firm
The key determinant to the suitability of the candidate is the ability to impact the firm and its objectives in a positive way. In essence, we must know why the opportunity exists in the first place. In fact the this WHY is so important that it will have a much higher weight-age than your qualification and “fit”.
We spend a lot of time it getting the WHY correct – from the perspective of the job and the candidate both. If you do it right it WILL show through the resume AND it will show in the interview. This articulation is sometimes so critical and often successfully done by some candidates that we are surprised to find they how a candidate a lesser experience got the job.
However the impact will be powerful only when the timing is right.
Timing is everything
Would you ask someone to get married on a first date?
Would you ask for a bonus or pay raise immediately after joining a new company?
You get it where we are going with this. Any sensible employer can “smell” it when you are switching at a perceived wrong time. Of course, several cogent arguments can be advanced for the specific situation but since hiring is a relative sport – even if you are considered as a candidate you may be at a disadvantage compared to the fellow applicants. This may be acceptable if you desperately need the job, but not certainly if you are trying to land your dream job at a dream company.
In essence, consider if you would feel it justifiable if you were an owner of the company – to hire a candidate who came from a similar background as yours. Falling in traps of self-congratulatory or overly critical stance is a possibility, but more often than not you would get an inner voice that will provide you the direction.
